This thesis explores, through theoretical and experimental studies, the necessity and feasibility of applying concise strategies in C-E simultaneous interpretation (SI) for impromptu speeches in a view to help student interpreters improve performance. It starts with Daniel Gile's Effort Model and Primary and Secondary Information Theory to demonstrate the necessity and importance of applying concise strategies in interpreting impromptu speeches and goes to justify the feasibility with the linguistic features of impromptu speeches and the Chinese-English linguistic and cultural differences before categorizing the tactics into generalization, simplification and omission. The theoretical analysis is followed by an experimental study about the performance of six student interpreters. The experiment aims to test the effectiveness of concise strategies in C-E interpreting. The result of the experiment turns out that the concise strategies can improve the production quality of primary information and the interpreter's performance. It is therefore suggested that student interpreters practice more, speak concise English, broaden their knowledge, and improve comprehension capacity and listening skills.
