As mass media gains momentum, much attention has been paid to live broadcasts, such as news broadcasts, interview programs, and live shows of major events. The advent of 5G technology increases the number of live streams, thus unleashing the demand for TV simultaneous interpreting. To find out how interpreters perform their tasks in live broadcasts, this study observes how professional interpreters deal with omissions in simultaneous interpreting on live TV and aims to answer three research questions: 1)What are the distribution patterns and characteristic features of different categories of omissions? 2)What are the motivations behind the omissions? 3)What suggestions can be given to help MTI students properly use omissions as a strategy when doing live TV simultaneous interpreting? The author selects the Apple product announcement in March 2019 as the study subject of this thesis.By sifting through the omissions in the material, the author counts the frequency of each type of omissions, analyzes their characteristics, and figures out the motivations behind them mainly based on Gile's Effort Models. The conclusions are listed as follows: 1)Professional interpreters use omission as a strategy in general.Modifiers,self-evident information and old information are most frequently omitted.2)Interpreters use the omission strategy for subjective and objective reasons, including dealing with differences in Chinese and English expression habits, improving the quality of translation outcomes, increasing interaction with the audience, and reducing the pressure on cognitive load.3)MTI students are advised to identify key and necessary information, practice balancing the efforts and pay high attention to the coherence and fidelity of the source text so as to better deal with TV simultaneous interpreting.
