This paper intends to study the new trends, techniques and theories in the translation of Chinese-specific words through the case study of The Governance of China. The second chapter is literature review and theoretical framework. The author discussed the theories, problems and possible solutions to mistranslations mentioned in many previous studies of the translation for China’s international communication. In terms of translation theories, the author conducted the study in the light of Venuti’s foreignization and domestication. She analyzed the specific translation strategies for Chinese-specific words in this book and assessed their effectiveness. In chapter four, the author did a case study by classifying Chinese-specific words into five categories. The author analyzed different strategies used in translating each category of words. The conclusion of this study is rather clear. The aim of international communication decided the strategies used. For culture-loaded words, domestication can help fulfill the goal of communication; for political concepts, foreignization can help leave the readers a deep impression of these words. In general, domestication and foreignization are inseparable in the translation process. The appendix is a Chinese-English table of the Chinese-specific words in The Governance of China. It also specified the translation technique used in translating each word.
