This thesis combines qualitative analysis together with quantitative analysis, and explores the impacts of PowerPoint in English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation. This thesis also suggests some coping tactics in PPT simultaneous interpretation. In the theoretical framework, the author reviews Daniel Gile’s effort model, and then comes up with an effort model with PPT. The author then explores the impacts of slide-reading effort, and proposes coping tactics. The author also reviews related researches. The number of related researches is very limited, and few of them give coping tactics. The author then conducts empirical study and analyses the general accuracy ratio through quantitative analysis. Through qualitative analysis of the questionnaires, the author analyses the causes for the difference in general accuracy ratio. Through qualitative analysis of specific texts, the author examines the effectiveness of the suggested tactics. The main conclusions are as follows:Through quantitative analyses, the author finds out that E-C simultaneous interpretation with PPT is less accurate than that without if the interpreter does not have preparation time. Also, interpreters who have accepted much PPT simultaneous training can interpret much better.Through qualitative analyses of the questionnaires, the author finds out that the main cause for accuracy difference is slide-reading effort. Failure sequences appear when the interpreter focuses too much attention on slide-reading.Through qualitative analyses of specific texts, the author proves the effectiveness of suggested coping tactics. The interpreter should distribute effort in a reasonable way, using tactics such as focusing on number or names, using visual effects, and deleting contents.
