The source text entitled National Government’s Claim and Protection of the South China Sea by Guo Yuan, a professor specializing in historical research in Heilongjiang University, is selected from a book named the History and Culture of Hainan. It belongs to informative text which has words up to10000. Its language is concise and its structure logical. It is made up of three parts. The first part deals with the Republic of China’s legal system on territorial waters and protection for maritime rights. The second part is concerned with the republic of China’s legal system on fishing zone and protection for fishery right in the South China Sea. And the last part is about lessons from the Republic of China’s maritime claims and practices. In this translation, I employ Nida’s translation theory as the theoretical basis and guidance. My translation report involves four parts. Part One gives a brief introduction of the source text. Part Two focuses on discussing the difficulties in the translation process. Part Three explores how Nida’s theory and some translation strategies and techniques such as literal translation, free translation, combination and transference are applied to translating the source text into the target one. The last part concludes the author’s view of this translation report. It is proved that Nida’s functional equivalence theory is workable in translating informative texts from the source language to the target language.
