In recent years, China has made remarkable progress in economy, technology and military affairs, and has played a vital role in international society. More and more people are focusing on China and desiring to know more about China. Political text is one of the major ways that foreigners learn about China’s national situation and recent development. Therefore, political interpretation is one of the most important ways through which the outside world can know China better and avoid misunderstanding. This thesis explores political interpretation under the guidance of Nida’s translation theory. It starts with the generalization of the study, including the background, the purpose and significance, the methodology and corpus and the structure of the whole thesis. Then the author summarizes the literature reviews of relevant studies on functional equivalence theory and political interpretation in western countries and in China. The third chapter is an introduction to Nida’s functional equivalence theory, including the nature of translation, the definition and development of this theory and two critical principles. The fourth chapter is the main part of this thesis which probes the feasibility of Nida’s theory in political interpretation and carries out a case study from three aspects, namely lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence and textual equivalence. Finally the author draws a conclusion, puts forward limitations and gives suggestions to future study in this field. In a word, through study and practice, the author draws a conclusion that by applying Nida’s functional equivalence theory, political interpretation can be more fluent, easily understood and refraining from obscurity. Therefore, this thesis has not only found a theoretical reference for political interpretation, but also extended the application of Nida’s functional equivalence theory.
