A Superb Dance With Fetters

In today’s world, the place and role of culture are becoming increasingly important in the competition of all countries’ comprehensive national strength. Therefore, China’s government has strongly advocated’Chinese culture going out’ to introduce its essence abroad. So far, lots of Chinese works have already been translated into English and many of them have been very popular among foreign readers. And thus it is of great significance to study these works’ translation features to provide experience and guidance for the continuous improvement of Chinese works’ translation quality.The work Lang Tu Teng, a novel by Jiang Rong who spent more than30years in conception and6years in creation based on his11years of life experience in Olonbulag, Inner Mongolia, has caused crazy tide in the domestic sales since its publication in2004. In2008, it was translated by the famous American translator Howard Goldblatt and won him the Man Asian Prize, and has become popular among English readers. Therefore, it is proved to be a typical case to study its translation features to provide reference for the translation and spread of contemporary Chinese literary works.This thesis, based on the narrative theory especially on its four core features----temporality, relationality, causal emplotment and selective appropriation, makes a comparative analysis of the narrating strategy of the Chinese and English version of Lang Tu Teng. It mainly analyzes the different framing ways of English version from the Chinese one, and finally point out that it is the very reason that Howard Goldblatt made every effort to reframe the English version which has made it so popular among English readers. It is expected that this thesis can enrich translation studies of Chinese contemporary literary works in both theory and practice, and bring some helpful inspirations to the translation of contemporary Chinese works and to ’Chinese culture going out’ strategy.
