The traditional Chinese culture which is dominanted by the Confucian isparticularly concerned about society and politics. In the modern times, as the warsbetween China and the western countries made the Chinese intellectuals feel thecountry was in danger, they would like to follow the traditional intellectuals andsearched confidence in the old culture. At the same time, the Republic of China wasestablished and the GuoXue reserchers were engaged in the social movement. Therefore, this topic is not only a interdisciplinary, but also tying to find a way todevelop the GuoXue reserch at the moment.Specifically, the first chapter definites GuoXue and the social movement. Frommy point of view, the mordern GuoXue is the symbol of a country. The GuoXueresearch method is affected by the western coutries and its main content is aboutConfucianism, Buddhism,Taosim, concentrating on literature and history. Besides,GuoXue is concerned about the socialty and has a capacity of other konwledge. Thesocial movements mainly concentrate on the political movement, cultural movement, the social construction movement, national salvation movement and movements aboutpolitical strife. The second and third chapters mainly talk about the ancient Chineseintellectuals and the social movements as well as GuoXue researches and socialmovements in late Qing Dynasty. The main part of the topic discusses the evolution ofthe relationship between GuoXue and the revolutionary movement, the ideologicalliberation movement, the ten-year construction movement of the Nanjing NationalGovernment, the anti-Japanese movement and the Confrontation between thenationalists and the communists as well as the relationshiops between GuoXue andpoliticians and development of GuoXue institution.Through the study I found that GuoXue as the hot issue is always related to political and social environment changes from the late Qing dynasty to the Republicof China. It was difficult for the intellectuals to study the so-called Pure GuoXue. Thecultural debates were always affected by the time, whether on the debates betweenthe western and the Chinese cultures or the pressure on GuoXue from science. Theofficial goverment, aiming to satisfy the needs to rule and fight against nationalsurvival crisis, also took GuoXue as a tool.Eventually, we realize that GuoXue and social movements in the Republic ofChina interact with each other. Their relationship is affected by the era, nationality, academics and politics. On one hand, it is due to the inherent elite participationawareness and sense of responsibility. On the other hand, it is because of the complexpolitical struggle in the Republic of China, which makes GuoXue studies closelyrelated to the social movements. The GuoXue and the social movement serve as themicrocosm of the coexistence between academic and political confrontation. TheGuoXue needed to find its place in the social movement while the social movementleaders used GuoXue to express their demands. What we should do now is avoidinguseless contrversy on whether GuoXue should be abolished or not and the politicalrendering. It’s time to focus on emphasizing cultural identity, save the national geneand carry forward the spirit of China.
