The Tang Dynasty was a multi-ethnic artistic prosperity of the times, showingsome unique qualities.As an excellent artistic carrier, Fresco compositions were leftstanding in the wake of time, war and malicious damage. In Tang Dynasty, it reachedthe peak in form, technique and state, which was beyond the reach of subsequentdynasties. It also was a powerful tool for us to learn and research the traditions and tocompromise it with our own aesthetical significance. We should learn from forebearsand keep continual learning to extend our vision, to have more creative investigationand to practice in our way of drawing and painting.Fresco compositions of Tang Dynasty kept a reservation of traditions of the useof colors and composition of the Wei, Jin and Sui Dynasties. It also selectivelyabsorbed the advantage of foreign cultures and built its own aesthetic standards andfashion into them, to create full artistic images and a unique artistic state. Inpersonage’s image, there were a lot of differences compared with formercompositions. The figure was ample and full, with calm, happy andcomfortable-looking face, which brought out the aesthetic trend of Tang Dynasty. Themost representative feature is the advent of feminine Buddha. In the visualizing of thescene, the form of painting, Shuo Tu Fa, became a rather typical one for big scene. Inthese scenes, pavilions were standing with rosy clouds and fairy mist, making itsumptuous and fine. From another perspective, it showed out the innate generosity ofpeople of Tang Dynasty. At the same time, Fresco compositions of Tang Dynastyshowed new ideas compared with former dynasties, such as the decrease of fairy birdsand beasts and the increase of explanation of worldly people and affairs in the tombfresco. Independent paper screen-like landscape paintings, as well as flower and birdpaintings appeared, so did the portrait-like pictures of supporter who dressed in thelatest style in the Buddhist murals. All above were true pictures of people’s goodliving and vigor at that time. The magnificent masterpieces, with their sumptuous,elegant colors and free, fine lines married both strength and tenderness, made a unique atmosphere of Tang Dynasty. Fresco compositions of Tang Dynasty, as a veryimportant part of Chinese fresco compositions’ history, not only inherited the soul offorefathers, but also blended aesthetic aims and art ideas appropriately into frescocompositions. In this way, the artistic style of Tang Dynasty’s fresco compositionswere a thing different form the predecessors, however, it also shine like the glory inChinese mural art history.This paper will start with existing fresco compositions of Tang Dynasty, and thenhave a detailed analysis and research into different regions and styles, mostly into theexisting grotto murals, temple murals and burial room murals of Tang Dynasty. Asthe Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang takes a big part in it, with good appearance and highartistic value, this paper will place it on the core place. Meanwhile, according to thetransmission and development of fresco compositions of Tang Dynasty, it will bemarked into different periods, such as the early, middle and middlelate Tang Dynasty,and combined with the influence of political, economical and cultural environment ofthat time, to try to explain the artistic features of fresco composition of Tang Dynastyin the view of the development of art, reduce its reaching influence on the latergenerations deeply in different points of view, and reinforce this paper’s authority andacademic influence through as much paperwork and photocopies as possible. What’smore, as the influence of fresco composition of Tang Dynasty had a great influenceon Japanese paintings, this paper will also explain it compared with some typical localpaintings from India, Egypt and European countries to clarify their characteristics.
