Due to limited options in pursuing further studies in Malaysia, Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) in Malaysian Chinese Independent Schools have been neglected, especially by the parents. However, the students’ learning in CCA gives them direct influences, which will enhance their learning holistically. Activities involving music can elevate students’ performance academically and has strong impact on their character development. Teaching objectives in many aspects can be achieved through music education. Hence, research studies have been carried out globally to a large extent in this area.Character development plays an important role and is strongly emphasised since the beginning of civilisation. The objectives in moral education among different schools are of the same vision. However, there are a few questions which have no definite answers provided by the schools. For example, how do students manage the challenges in their behavioural development? What are the strategies or practices to help the students in this area? How should they be implemented by the schools? Adolescence has been a vital period in character development. CCA have been proven to be an effective approach to promote moral education in schools. Music is one of the major aspects of aesthetics. It is an art by itself. A good composition must consist of meaningful content which is thought-provoking and leads people to be morally-upright.In Yong Peng High School Symphonic Band, students are taught to convey the messages in different genres of music work in order to strengthen their musical sense and shape their characters. This can hardly be achieved without structured training. Studies will be carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the structured training tailor-made for Yong Peng High School Symphonic Band. The relationship between this training system, music education and character development has also been extensively explored in this thesis.
