Raymond Carver was one of the most important writers in the renaissance of short fiction in American1980s. His stories depict the common herd in the post-industrial society of America. He is so insightful at finding out the meaning of the existence in the daily trifles that people named him as "the middle-class Chekhov of America".He knows the art of suggestion very well:he describes the chaotic life to show the desire for reason and order; he depicts the life of the failure to emphasize the beauty of the lost dream; he uses the strategy of blank to intimate the continuous emotions and the incomparable existence. The essay starts with the analysis of the characters’ inner world of Raymond Carver’s short fictions, then tries to picture out the charms of his art. The first chapter starts with the descriptions of the self-delusion, then analyzes the relationship between the self and the other; Chapter Two begins with the descriptions of the loser, then analyzes their ways of self-rescue when facing the predicament; Chapter Three starts with the descriptions of the "dumber", then makes an insight into the communication-breakdowns in the postmodern America.
