It was a special period of social transformation in the38th years of theRepublic of China, and also a significant historical period when China’snew-style publication began to emerge and develop, catalyzing the shootingand forming of logos of the publications. Logos of publication appeared in lateQing Dynasty, and became widespread in the Republican period of China(1911-1949). It truly reflects the embryo and implementation process of Chinamodern copyright, and is also a sample of culture communication between theeast and the west in the history of art design.As an important visual carrier, logos of publications in the Republicanperiod are a vital component of modern logos in China. Its visual style isclosely related to the Zeitgeist of historical culture, political structures and artfeatures in the Republican period of China. It shows the evolution anddevelopment track of Republican history, politics, religion and culture, basedon its abundant themes, distinctive features, and exquisite design or so,presents the cultural conflict between parties, the collision between traditionaland western culture, and the conflict and blend of art movements in the eastand west, and reflects the humanistic spirit and Zeitgeist features in theRepublican period. Logos of publications in the Republican period, which isvital to the value of historical records and art value, provides us with abundantimage elements for China’s logo design.The change and advancement of the design in China’s modern logos ofpublications can be seen from the massive remained logos of publicationsduring the Republican period. Logos of publications tended to traditionalnationalistic style in the late19th century, and in the early20th century, imagesusing and imitating in different categories of western art appeared in logos ofpublications. Finally, influenced by various western art movements, itpresented the combined traditional and western design style, gradually realizing localization reform in themes and skills of design. The thesis studiesthe impact of design styles, historical and cultural background, political parties,and religious activities in the Republican period on logos of publications and italso explores the application of Chinese Modernism design to the origin anddevelopment process of logos of publications in the Republican period. Inaddition, it highlights colorful art design styles and brilliant historicalachievements to add and improve the weaknesses and disadvantages ofmodern graphic logo design in China, offering enlighten and reference topresent China design.
