In the21st century, with the rapid development of politics, economy, and culture, the world is becoming a global village. Interpretation, as an important means of international exchange and cooperation, is playing an increasingly important role in cross-cultural communication. On the whole, the process of interpretation is not simply a language activity but also a cultural one, a cross-cultural communication process; as a result, cross-cultural difference makes a fundamental impact on interpreting. Taking that into account, it is of great significance for the development of interpreting theory and practice to analyze and study interpretation from the perspective of cultural difference.According to skopos theory, translation is a human activity with purpose; the translation purpose determines the methods as well as strategies of translation and the criterion of translation text is whether it can achieve the purpose of translation. In view of skopos theory, the translation text is influenced and determined by corresponding social, cultural, historical factors, etc. The different purposes of translation will lead to varied emphases in the translation process of the same source text.On the basis of skopos theory, this thesis is an attempt to analyze the cultural differences in C-E interpretation, and is aimed at tackling the differences by means of some feasible strategies and techniques. The thesis is composed of five chapters. In the first chapter, the background, motivation, research significance, methodology and the structure of the thesis are briefed. Then it introduces the basic concepts and development of skopos theory, states the three major rules and their characteristics, and discusses the significance of skopos theory. The third part discusses the classification, characteristics and criteria of interpretation, probes into the inter-relationship between culture, language and interpretation and expounds on cultural differences and difficulties caused by them in interpretation. Next, the thesis testifies to the feasibility of applying skopos theory to tackling cultural differences in interpreting by employing and discussing plenty of relevant examples. The author suggests that, under the guidance of skopos theory, the strategies of domestication and foreignization, and techniques like transliteration and borrowing could be used flexibly to cope with cultural differences in C-E interpretation. Conclusion is the last part of the thesis, which summarizes its contributions and limitations. It also puts forward some advice for future study.
