| With its booming economy and rising international status,Chinese culture is attracting more and more attention from the world.More foreigners come to China.Series such as “China from a foreigner’s perspective” have been gaining popularity in recent years.Through Wuzhen to China: An Englishman’s Journey is this kind of book about Wuzhen written by British author Nicholas Chrimes.Domestically,Wuzhen is a typical representative of ancient towns with a long history and profound cultural deposits.Internationally,Wuzhen is known as the permanent host of the World Internet Conference.In the book,Nicholas Chrimes condenses China’s long history,great culture and prosperous status quo into this ancient town from a unique British perspective,vividly presenting China’s long history,splendid culture and vigorous development to the readers.Because of the different cultures and ideas of the east and the west,Nicholas Chrimes draws many analogies between English and Chinese culture in his book.These wonderful analogies are very attractive to Chinese readers.As they read books and travel to the unique Chinese ancient town,they may recall these brilliant analogies.The analogies help Chinese readers to perceive the long history and grace of their own culture and know more about western culture.Thus,the national pride of Chinese readers is enhanced.Translating this book into Chinese can help Chinese readers know about what Chinese culture is from the view of foreigners,broaden the horizon of Chinese readers,and increase the diversity of Chinese cultural works.During translating,the author of this translation practice(hereinafter called the author)realizes that the equivalent transmission of information is a challenge,that is,how to balance cultural differences in the translation process is an important issue.To solve this problem,based on the Skopos theory as theoretical guidance,excerpts from the book Chapter 4 and Chapter 10 as this translation practice material,the author adopts domestication and foreignization translation strategies,and uses translation techniques of free translation,diction,transliteration plus semantic translation,literal translation plus annotations,four-character structure,etc.,to make the translation conform to Chinese language habits.In the process of translation,the author not only conveys the surface information of the translation material,but also pays attention to its deep cultural information.This translation report is composed of the following four chapters: the first chapter is the introduction to the translation task,including the introduction to the background of translation task,previous researches on translation of tourism materials and the significance of the translation practice.The second chapter is the description of the translation process including preparations before translation,during translation process and translation difficulties,and quality control after translation.In this chapter,the author analyzes the characteristics of English and Chinese tourism texts,and puts forward corresponding solutions to the translation difficulties.Chapter Three is the application of Skopos theory in the translation practice from lexical,syntactical and discourse aspects.The fourth chapter is a conclusion to this translation practice,summing up the findings and limitations of this translation practice.While translating Through Wuzhen to China: An Englishman’s Journey,the author also focuses on the linguistic features of tourism texts.Some necessary adjustments are made according to the sentence structures and features of the target language to make the translation conform to linguistic convention and aesthetic requirements of the target language readers. |
