As a theme of worldwide literature,“local-color novels” show its unique value of literature when thesociety ahead to the industrial age. Local-color is relative to city. The important features of local-colornovels are “folk-custom” and “local-color”, which are in the reference of the industrial civilization. Theimportant features of local-color novels contain three levels of meaning, one is concern about thegeographical local which is distinguished from city; the second is focus on the expression of independentlocal consciousness; the third is show the regional culture which has rich local color. It can be said that thegeographical scope of local, local cultural and local spirit are three-dimensional image of local-colornovels.Xinjiang is a multi-ethnic place. It has the scenery of Hongliu, grassland, Gobi, oasis and desert, andit also has different local conditions and customs which belong to different nationalities. Xinjiang is afertile ground for the growth of local novels. Kazakh is a poetic nation, has a long history of poetry. In1930s-1940s, a new literary style---novel appeared. The rise of Kazakh novels become an importantsymbol of prosperity of Kazakh literature after the founding of new China. The development of the novel isthe most rapidly. In the growth and development process of Chinese contemporary Kazakh novels, life andmemory of rural pastoral area always are the most solid and active creative resources for Kazakh writers.From the choice of subject, aesthetic orientation, the most prominent achievements in Xinjiangcontemporary Kazakh novels is local-color novels, so the local-color novels is the normal form of Xinjiangcontemporary Kazakh novels. Xinjiang contemporary Kazak local-color novels have the description ofgrassland landscape and herdsmen’s life, and also have the narration of the Kazakh folk customs, which fullof deep love to hometown, prairie and the motherland and have sentimental attachment to the traditionalculture. In the novels, writers reflect the new life in rural pastoral area, show the daily life and emotion ofKazakh people, and think about the destiny of the nation. The thinking of social transformation is thecommon topic in Xinjiang contemporary Kazakh novels. The collision between tradition and modern inKazakh social transformation is the problem which Kazakh writers most concerned.This thesis mainly focus on the representative writers and their works, deals with the study of thecultural connotation, artistic vitality of Kazakh contemporary local-color novels, grasp the style of Kazakhcontemporary local-color novels. The thesis is divided into four parts:In the introduction, it includes the topic raised, the current researching situation and the significance ofthis topic, train of thought of this thesis and the definition of several concepts. The first chapter is aboutnarrative themes of Xinxiang contemporary Kazakhs local-color novels. It contains three parts: strong localemotion in Xinjiang contemporary Kazakhs local-color novels, ecological harmonious ideas in Xinjiangcontemporary Kazakhs local-color novels, and anxiety and rational thinking on Kazakh culture. The secondchapter analyses typical actor’s images in Xinjiang contemporary local-color novels, such as the actors whowere foreignized by desire, money and power; who believed the bad habits of traditional culturalstubbornly; and who can make rational choice in cultural collision. The third chapter analyzes thefolk-custom of material life, social life and spiritual life in contemporary Kazakh local-color novels. Thedescription of folk customs and its cultural connotation not only fully reflect the aesthetic characteristics ofXinjiang contemporary Kazak local-color novels, but also profoundly convey cultural psychology ofwriters.
