Research On Variant Forms Of The Same Word In Modern Chinese

Variant Forms of the Same Word are the words that are used contemporarily, unisonant, synonymous but in different writings. The formation causes of Variant Forms of the Same Word are diachronic. The amount of the Chinese Variant Forms of the Same Word is quite considerable, and the causes are very complicated. The author collected and organized405groups of commonly used Variant Forms of the Same Word, and did the research on the basis of these corpus.The body of the paper is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, the author summarized the current relevant academic achievements in this field, and pointed out its current insufficiency in the definition and the formation causes and in the comparative research between Mainland and Taiwan. Therefore, specially on these three aspects, the author did much further research in this paper.In the second chapter, through classifying the405groups of words, the author analyzed the formation causes for the Variant Forms of the Same Word. There are mainly four reasons:①’different writing but the same morpheme’, included ’resulting from the differentiate characters’and’the synonymous characters’.②’different characters but having interlinked meanings’, including ’similar semanteme’and’assemble words’.③phonetic loan characters words.④different word-formation motivation.In the third chapter, the author investigated deeply into’辨/辨’groups,’与/予’ groups,’联/连’ groups,’辞/词’groups,’与/预/豫’groups,’梅/霉’groups and’霉/楣’groups, made a contrast between the actual pragmatics situation between the two sides of the Cross-Strait, and analyzed the different evolution trends and put forward critics on China’s existing standards as well as suggestions for China’s standardization.In the fourth chapter, the author contrasted the similarities and differences between the two sides of the Cross-Strait from two aspects. One is from the entry of the Mainland’s dictionary and Taiwan’s dictionary, and the other pragmatics. It turns out that the high-frequency morphologies are almost the same, so it is conducive to the unification and standardization of the words writing on both sides. However, some words writing are different and they are mainly caused by four reasons:①Diffferent words writing systems: Traditional Chinese characters or Simplified Chinese characters.②Different words-using preference: Taiwan focuses more on the etymology, while Mainland follows the conventions.③Different writing customs on certain words.④Discrepancies on culture and cognition between the two sides.The epilogue pointed out the limitation of this paper. One is the insufficiency of the amount of the words for the diachronic research. The other is the sufficiency of the Taiwan’s corpus. Both need enlarging and improving.
