Synonyms are difficult both for foreign students to learn, and Chinese teachers to teach. This thesis is based on a foundation set by previous studies. Information about20foreign students in a Nanjing University advanced Chinese class was gathered through questionnaires, teaching experiments, and other data-collecting, and this thesis is a study of their process of learning synonyms. Errors and reasons for these errors were analyzed in the hope that research results will be of some help for the future of Chinese language teaching.During the course of Chinese Language Study and Teaching Chinese to Foreigners and synonym research, the concept and the analysis method of synonyms was subtly different. The differences between synonym dictionary compilation in Chinese teaching and the teaching of Chinese as a second language mainly consist of six aspects-the booming year, the compilation objective, range of vocabulary, definition, sources of cases, and the explanation of foreign translations. Base the study of Chinese, this thesis proclaim the differences of Chinese synonyms in the teaching of Chinese as a second language. These provide the basis of our teaching experiments, questionnaires and other data-collecting.The results of the study show that the key to improving students’ understanding of synonyms is in-class teaching. Teachers should adjust teaching methods according to students’ requests, and apply appropriate exercises to test the effects of these methods. This study found that proper explanation in class is of great help to advanced students when learning synonyms. In addition, when designing their courses, teachers should take willingness and capacity into consideration, using reasonable and moderate technical terminology. Feedback of homework is also an important link to which teachers need to pay attention to.Of all the collected6,460sentences,1,045sentences had some mistake. After analyzing these1,045sentences from pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar angles. Pronunciation errors are caused by syllable. Vocabulary errors mostly stemmed from not understand the meanings of words, incorrect semantic emphasis, not understanding dimension limits, language character misinterpretation. Grammar errors came from misusing parts of speech, word overlap and incorrect word pairing. The causes of advanced level student synonym errors are as follows:negative transfer from native language and understanding of target language were the cause of the majority of problems from students. Teachers’ imprecise explanations and neglecting to differentiate between words in the classroom were also the cause of misunderstandings. Imprecise teaching material and English annotations in textbooks also led students to use synonyms incorrectly.Words are the meat and bones of a language. Synonyms, as an important piece of language, should be given more attention from students and teachers. Only by learning Chinese synonyms well can speakers express their meaning correctly. Learning synonyms well will require both the hard work of the students and the help of the teachers. Chinese teachers should have enough language knowledge to be able to expand on or correct questions raised by dictionaries, reference books and textbooks, and understand student mistakes, in order to achieve the best results.
