As China has deepened its "Going Global" policy, there have been more international meetings than ever. To save time and to improve efficiency, many of the meetings have adopted simultaneous interpretation (SI). However, SI is not an easy task. Given the differences between Chinese and English, the interpreters will naturally encounter difficulties during SI. The biggest problem for them may be the translation of long attributives. In Chinese, attributives are usually put before the head words no matter how lengthy they may be, but in English, long attributives are often placed behind the head words to form an attributive clause. In SI, interpreters often do not have much time and energy to wait for the head words and then adjust the word order while receiving new information, and they should, therefore, adopt certain tactics to cope with this difficulty. During SI trainings, the author finds that some attributives have their own internal logic, and there are some nominal structures before or inside the attributives that can serve as the subject of that logic. The author believes that such structures can be made the subjects of the attributives, and can be used to change the attributives into new sentences. In this way, the interpreters no longer need to wait for the head words and can start translating as soon as possible. Therefore, this thesis aims to study the application of subject-like structures in the translation of long attributives and the corresponding effect. The author hopes that this thesis can inspire future studies on SI training and practices.Through the analysis of Effort Model and different categories of Chinese long attributives, this thesis points out some specific problems that interpreters may encounter while dealing with long attributives in SI, and then studies through experiments the application of subject-like structures in different types of long attributives. Experimental results show that using subject-like structures in SI does help the interpreters to cope with long attributives. It can allow the interpreters to translate the received information in time so that he is burdened with less effort, and as a result, it can improve the quality of translation.
