The present author firstly does a simultaneously interpreting about Barack Obama and Mitt Romney’s four election speeches in 2012 from English to Chinese including their nomination speeches, Obama’s victory speech and Romney’s defeat speech. Secondly, the present author writes an interpreting report related to the difficulties in this project.Obama and Romney’s speeches belong to political discourse with a wide audience whose expression is both popular and call to action. The frequently used long sentence has a load of information with tight structures and well-organized logic which cause a heavy burden to the memory of the interpreter. There are many long sentences, some has many parallel phrases and expressions, that is the parallel long sentences; some has word repetition and parenthesis, that is the affiliated long sentences; some has many clauses in one sentence with tight structures, that is the long sentence with multi-clauses.To these difficulties and under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory that in the process of comprehending, de-verbalizing and re-expressing, the interpreter can’t just do the word to word interpretation but also take the culture background information into account to find the best interpreting that suits the target language, the present author adopts syntactic linearity, omission and chunking methods to cope with the parallel long sentences, affiliated long sentences and the multi-clauses long sentences. In long sentence interpretation from English to Chinese, the present author finds that syntactic linearity can help the interpreter deal with information for emphasizing and listing more naturally, omission can help reduce the redundancy and slip of tongue, chunking can help the interpreter get the sentence structure and logic quickly. |
