Study On The Shift Between Subject And Topic In E-C Simultaneous Interpretation

This report is based on the mock simultaneous interpreting task,the lecture of “Neuroscience and Epilepsy” and gives an analysis of the shift between subject and topic according to the audio material and its transcription.The lecturer,Suzanne O'Sullivan,was born in Ireland and now works in London as a doctor.She has got a degree with the major of creative writing and published several books.During this lecture,Susan illustrates some cases of her patients described in her new book,Brain Storm.For interpreter,SI(simultaneous interpreting)involves many tasks.And English is the subject-based language and hypertax in which pauses and conjunction can make the logic in the context clearer.While,Chinese is the topic-based subject and parataxis,and its sentences are mainly short,compact and flexible in forms.In SI,giving more attention to the shift between subject and topic can help interpreter produce authentic target language while shortening the response time and reducing the task burden.This report composes four parts,namely task description,task process,case analysis and summary of the practice.In the first part,interpreter gives a general introduction of the interpretation task,and analyzes the characteristics of the task;in the second part,the interpreter introduces the process of interpreting and the preparation work before interpretation and the transcription.And in the third part,the interpreter analyzes the application of different interpreting strategies under different shift modes of subject and topic.According to the difficulties of language shift,the interpreter adopts six interpreting strategies for case analysis,namely,sentence breaking and cohesion,active and passive ellipsis,simplification and transformation.In the fourth part,the interpreter considers significance and limitations of the practice report of simultaneous interpretation.In conclusion,the interpreter analyzes the shift between subjects and topics in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting,and applies different interpreting strategies,which can serve as the reference for the same type of simultaneous interpreting activities.
