A Study Of Report Translation From The Perspective Of Explicitation

First brought up in1958by Vinay and Darbenet, explicitation in translation refers to the phenomenon of "making explicit in the target language what remains implicit in the source languaeg because it is apparant either from the context or the situation". In1986, Blum-Kulka proposed the famous " Explicitation Hypothesis ", triggering a heated discussion in this study field. As one of the "universals" of translation, explicitation can be found in all types of translation practices.Focused on conveying information, report translation is a kind of non-literary translation, which follows the general rules of accuracy and concision. However, since terms and complex structures are common in report texts, many existing report translations are found hard to read or understand. With explicitation strategies to reveal the implicit information and strengthen cohesion, these translations will be improved effectively.This paper discussed strategies of explicitation in report translation, as shown in the translation of Rethinking Personal Data:A New Lens for Strengthening Trust, a report issued by the World Economic Forum in2014. At first, the paper introduced different features of explicitation at four different levels:grammar, semantics, pragmatics and discourse; then examples from the translation practice were given to demonstrate explicitation strategies at each level; finally conclusions were made that means of explicitation vary at different levels, especially at the discourse level where multiple cohesion ties are used, such as reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, lexical cohesion and restructure. Though explicitation strategies have been helpful in report translation, they must be limited to a reasonable degree, and further research is needed for translators to define this degree.
