On The Translator’s Feminist Translation Strategies In The Three Body Problem

Science fiction, as an important literary genre, is less discussed in China’s literary world. It is neither popular among China’s mainstream readers. With the rise of China’s sci-fi literature in the new century, Liu Cixin, the representative of China’s "hard" sci-fi writer, brings China’s science fiction to a world level by his sci-fi series The Three Body Problem.In former studies of Liu Cixin’s works, Chinese scholars mainly focus on Three Body’s literary and realistic value for the development of China’s sci-fi literature. One scholar took a unique perspective of ecofeminism to study Three Body’s feminist The Three Body Problem. By using feminist translation theories, this paper analyzes how the subjectivity of translator Ken Liu is reflected in his translation and how he managedview that is based on cosmic socialism. This paper also takes a feminist approach to appreciate to rewrite the original text in a feminist way in the process of translating.The core of feminist translation theory includes:diminishing gender discrimination in translation study and practice; redefining the relationship between the writer and the translator; and improving the social status of translation. By listing examples of Ken Liu’s uses of feminist translation strategies (i.e. prefacing and footnoting, supplementing, and hijacking), this paper shows concrete evidence of translator’s view on feminist translation.By applying the first two strategies, the translator complements the missing information in the process of cultural communication. Ken Liu’s translation no longer focuses on the transmission of information and linguistic skills. Ken Liu’s work touches upon cultural ideology, and improves the status of translators and translated works. By applying "hijacking" strategy, Liu removes gender discrimination in the original text and highlights the positive image of female characters. From the aspect of readers’ acceptance, the application of feminist translation strategy contributes to the process of breaking down barriers between Chinese and Western cultures, understanding the writer’s intention and diminishing gender discrimination.
