A Study On The C-E Translation Of Chinese Political Speeches

Political speeches, as an important part of the external publicity of China’s political system, principles and policies, mark with distinct features of Chinese culture and ideologies. Therefore, the main translation difficulties lie in both linguistic and cultural levels. In this sense, it is of great importance to let the target audience have a clear mind about the cultures permeated between the lines during the process of delivering the accurate meaning of the source language. A qualified translated version must be faithful to the original texts as well as smooth and readable for the target audience.Based on previous studies and the translation practice of Speech in the Economic Conference of CCP Committee of Xiuwu County, this thesis discussed the English translation of Chinese political speeches in several aspects. In Chapter two, Chinese political speeches were defined and the text features were analyzed at lexical, syntactical, and rhetoric levels respectively. In Chapter three, two translation standards, namely faithfulness and smoothness, were illustrated in detail. Chapter four analyzed the main translation problems when translating the selected Chinese political report. Several translation strategies were then offered to tackle the problems at the comprehension and reproduction stages of translation process.
