The Studies Of The Translation Of Cement Technology Documents From The Perspective Of Catford’s Translation Equivalence Theory:

Cement technical literature has its own features, namely, the standardized language, objective discussions, simplified descriptions, no emotional coloring. The most striking features are accurate data, formal text and well-conceived logic. So it demands translators be not only familiar with these features, but also have good acquaintance with the terminologies and ways of expression. Meanwhile, they should have a good command of corresponding translation skills and strategies.The concept of translation equivalence was introduced by John Cunnison Catford in1965. Based on the system-functional linguistics, he held that if the source language (or part) and the target language (or part) can be transformed under a specified context, then translation equivalence is established. The author conducts a thorough research into the Catford’s translation equivalence theory by referring to relevant papers and materials so that the translation of Techniques and Equipment of New Dry Process Cement (NDP Cement) Production can be studied from the perspective of Catford’s Translation Equivalence Theory.Thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter is the research background and significance of the thesis. The second chapter introduces current research situation of both the translation of cement technical literature and Catford’s translation equivalence theory. The third chapter makes an introduction to Catford’s translation equivalence theory and its feasibility of translation of cement technical literature. The forth chapter mainly discusses the language features of the book on lexical level, syntax level and text level, as well as the application of Catford’s translation equivalence theory on three levels. The fifth chapter analyzes the limitations of Catford’s theory. The last chapter presents my comments on Caford’s theory, and its shortcoming in dealing with translations as well as my proposed solutions to translation of the technical literature in this regard.
