Since internet technology was firstly invented in America in the1970s, it has exerted great effects on various aspects of human life, including the way people communicate with each other. Internet language comes into being as a result, which is different from the traditional way of communication. Since the introduction of the internet into China, the Chinese language is inevitably influenced. Although internet language, seeking novelty in form, is different from natural language as a communication medium, there is still similarity between each other. By observing methods of generating Chinese internet language and Chinese character in the initial stage, we can find that the traditional six scripts theory of interpreting Chinese characters is still an effective means to interpret internet language.A qualitative method is adopted in this thesis and the following two questions are mainly analyzed:1. Is the six scripts theory an effective way to understand Chinese internet language?2. In which way can Chinese internet language be explained based on the theory? Through a detailed analysis, we find that,1. the six scripts theory is an effective way to interpret Chinese internet language, despite the novel and complicated formation of the language;2. emoticons has become a significant means for online communication;3. the interaction between Chinese internet language and off-line language has been more and more frequent;4. the internet makes communication and integration of different languages and cultures easier and faster. The present study has the following significance:1. enriching the study on Chinese internet language in a new perspective;2. reminding people of the importance of tradition inheritance in linguistic science, thus refuting those who think that the six scripts theory is outdated;3. this study would be beneficial to the plausibility of internet language, since internet language has based itself on tradition in terms of word-making.
