A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Culture-loaded Words From The Perspective Of Function Plus Loyalty Theory

As a window for foreigners to know Chinese culture,the translation of culture-loaded words supplies an access to know Chinese culture better.The quality in translating culture-loaded words of network literature influences the reading experience of targettext readers.However,domestically,the studies in this field are few and far between.Consequently,it is necessary to pay great attention to the translation of culture-loaded words in network literature.A Gallop on the Spring Embankment is a network novel which is highly welcomed in China.Besides the funny plots and humorous language style,it contains many cultureloaded words.According to the classification proposed by Nida,there are five kinds of culture-loaded words: material culture-loaded words,social culture-loaded words,linguistic culture-loaded words,religious culture-loaded words and ecological cultureloaded words.The present research searches for the culture-loaded words in this novel and finds out that they fall into the above five kinds respectively.The translation theory of Function plus Loyalty proposed by Nord includes two theoretical cornerstones: Function and Loyalty.The theory of Function plus Loyalty requires translators not only to consider the achievement of translation's function,but also the realization of loyalty to the source-text author,initiator and target-text readers.Based on Nord's Function plus Loyalty Theory and Nida's classification of cultureloaded words,this thesis formulates a framework of the translation of culture-loaded words to guide the translation of five kinds of culture-loaded words in the novel.Loyalty means the relations between the source-text author,translators,target-text readers and the translation initiator,belonging to an abstract concept.The thesis focuses on the realization of Loyalty from macroscopic view and analyzes the requirements of the initiator,targettext readers and source-text author and then illustrates the translation process and the expecting purposes of the translation.Function refers to the elements that enable the translation work to operate in the target environment according to pre-defined ways,which consists of three rules: skopos rules,coherence rules and fidelity rules.Among them,fidelity rules,subordinated to coherence rules are both inferior to skopos rules.In this thesis,the embodiment of the function is implemented into specific translation strategies.Through the analysis of the three rules and the characteristics of five kinds of culture-loaded words in the novel,the thesis comes out that the translation of the culture-loaded words should maintain the exotic feature of the source text and in the meanwhile,try to make it coherence and fidelity.In practice,material culture-loaded words,social culture-loaded words and ecological culture-loaded words are translated adopting foreignization as the major translation strategy while religious culture-loaded words and linguistic culture-loaded words are translated employing domestication as the main translation strategy.Nida's classification of culture-loaded words and Nord's Function plus Loyalty is closely combined in this thesis,which will supply reference for related study on the translation of culture-loaded words.
