| The studies of double object construction, serial verb construction andconjunction predicate structure have made great achievements from the perspectiveof not only traditional grammar but also other theories. However, the structure of thesentence “我é€ç»™ä½ 一本书看â€(I give you a book to read) has not attracted muchattention of scholars, even if there are some researches being conducted fromdifferent theoretical backgrounds, and most of all, these researches have not reachedconsensus in its definition and attribution.Traditional studies mostly regard this kind of structure as a conjunctionpredicate structure. However, this thesis does not acknowledge the existence of“conjunction predicate structure†and in fact its appearance is the result of theconcession of syntax to semantics. Later many scholars explore its syntactic structureunder the framework of generative grammar theory. However, X-bar theory ingenerative theory pays more attention to linear description and semanticinterpretation, which leads to the diseconomy of the minimalist substantialexploration. Naturally the syntactic analysis based on this theory is naturallyredundant and cumbersome.Based on above studies, this thesis explores the syntactic structure of thissentence according to the thought of vertical assignment and merger, Principle andParameters Theory, as well as the logic frame of human language. It is believed herethat the basic frame of human language F is composed of NP and VP, and othercomponents are attached to the frame F. Therefore,“我é€ç»™ä½ 一本书看â€(I give youa book to read) can be analyzed as follows:“我é€ä¸€æœ¬ä¹¦â€(I give a book) is thebasic single sentence which is composed of NP “我â€(I) and VP “é€ä¸€æœ¬ä¹¦â€(give abook); the prepositional phrase “给â€(give) and the adverbial clause of purpose “看â€(read) are attached to the single sentence “我é€ä¸€æœ¬ä¹¦â€(I give a book). Here “é€â€(give) is analyzed into preposition, VP “看â€(read) into an adverbial clause of purpose.Because it not only can solve the deficiencies of “conjunction predicate structureâ€during the hierarchical analysis of the structure, but also simplifies the redundancy and cumbersome of the movement theory in generative grammar. Besides, it alsoprovides a new solution to analysis of the hierarchy of double object structure insome parataxis languages which lack of morphological changes, such as Chinese. |
