| This is a translation project report on analysis of subtitle text from English TV series Sherlock (Season 3). Films and TV dramas, as a special carrier of cultural transmission, play a vital role in globally cross-cultural communication. And their successes in overseas market and in cultural transmission depend largely on translated subtitles which function as a bridge. Therefore it’s essential to enhance the quality of subtitle translation. However subtitle translation attracts far less attention than film and television industry. The research on it is still young. The author selects subtitles from this TV drama not only out of love for it but also in the hope of finding solutions to difficulties the author encountered in the process of translation and offering some tips to other translators who are resolved to work in the subtitling. Subtitling, a special type of translation, possesses both features of common translation and its own hallmarks. Two main difficulties thwarting the author in subtitling:the translation of culture-loaded words and the translation of long sentences. The latter in subtitle translation consists of both structurally complicated sentences and ordinary ones that cannot be finished in given time. In the light of subtitling characteristics and under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory advanced by Verschueren, the author sums up several translation methods and tries to solve the two difficulties. Methods of literal translation, annotation, free translation and substitution are adopted to translate culture-loaded words, and splitting-up, reduction and inversion are employed in terms of translation of long sentences. These methods can be used to solve some subtitling problems, and translators are required to make flexible use of them and be more innovative to summarize more methods. |
