With the development of the booming industry of exhibitions, there has been an increasing demand for exhibition-interpreters. Many of those who are working for exhibitions in China appeared to be unqualified. So it has become a critical issue to analyze the necessary qualities of an exhibition-interpreter.A qualified exhibition-interpreter should have excellent language skills, acute hearing and the capability to grasp the corpus of a specific industry. He should also be articulate and be capable of identifying and understanding different accents. These qualities are essential for a qualified exhibition-interpreter in order to demonstrate a company’s products and guarantee a smooth communication between the company and foreign investors.This project report is based on the reporter’s interpreting work and experience at the 22nd Shanghai International Ad & Sign Technology & Equipment Exhibition. The reporter analyzes the major issues and difficulties of the project, including the high requirement of understanding terminology of ad-display industry, the obstacles of identifying the accents of non-native speakers and coping with unexpected situations. Through detailed analysis and research, the reporter proposes several tactics to deal with these problems, including corpus construction, research on various English accents in different countries, the cultivation of psychological quality and cross-cultural awareness and delaying thinking time. |
