This is a translation project about the academic essay—"On Happiness and Human Potentials:A Review of Research on Hedonic and Eudaimonic Well-Being", which was written by Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci, American professors of psychology, and published in an American periodical, Annual Reviews of Psychology, in2001. This essay is related to the area of positive psychology and is a predominant work in the early days of this area. It studies personal well-being from two perspectives—hedonic approach and eudaimonic approach, and reviews important issues related to well-being.This essay has the features of being psychology-specialized, academic and complex in terms of sentence structures, hence, the approach of semantic translation is used to maintain the exact original content and keep the academic features, and the approach of communicative translation is adopted to deal with the complex sentences and make the translation readable to the readers. Under the guidance of the two approaches, six strategies are applied, including following the the original syntactic order, turning phrases into clauses, reinventing sentence structures, semantic explication, semantic extension and conversion, in order to produce a better translation. This project includes two parts. The first part is the original text and its translation. The second part is a critical commentary on the translation. The commentary falls into three sections. The first section is a brief introduction to the project, including the purpose and the significance of the project as well as the applied translation approaches. The second section gives examples are to illustrate the application of the translation approaches and strategies. And the third section comes to a conclusion of the importance and necessity of combining the semantic approach and communicative approach in translating such text.
