On The Origin And Evolution Of Hua Yi Concept Of Ancient Vietnam

Hua Yi concept, which known as Hua Yi thought, is a concept that centers upon Chinese culture, which supposes that the culture of barbarian should be disdained. The distinction of Hua and Yi is the core thought of the Hua Yi concept which differentiated civilizations that based on Chinese culture from other cultures of barbarian. This concept born with the communication between ancient Chinese culture and outsiders. Based on the concept, ancient China built a Hua Yi order in east Asia. So Chinese culture especially Confucianism spread to the surroundings and Hua Yi concept was also introduced to these countries by Confucian classics.Before968AD Vietnam was a part of Chinese empire, so its thought and culture was influenced by Hua Yi concept. The ancient Vietnam’s Hua Yi concept had experienced four periods:Ly dynasty was the first period, Tran dynasty to the Fourth Chinese domination of Vietnam was the second period, Later Le dynasty to early Nguyen dynasty was peak of its development. The ancient Vietnam’s Hua Yi concept has been dead out since France invaded Vietnam.There are five chapters of this thesis:the first chapter mainly discusses the Hua Yi concept. The second chapter concentrate on the background of its development in ancient Vietnam in order to reveal that the Hua Yi concept is not only a imported idea, but also meet the ideological and political needs of the Vietnamese. The third chapter takes a prescient gaze into the development of Hua Yi concept during Ly dynasty period. The fourth chapter focuses on how the impact of the invasions of Yuan dynasty and Ming dynastyinfluenced Hua Yi concept of Vietnam. The fifth chapter tries to figure out that how Hua Yi concept of Vietnam came to its climax and why it extincted. The last chapter evaluates Hua Yi concept of Vietnam and compares it with some similar thoughts of Japanese and Korean as well as point out that how Hua Yi concept controls the Vietnam’s diplomatic acts contemporarily. We can find that it reflected ancient Vietnam’s diplomatic affairs and its political actions.
