This is a translation project on part of the eighteenth chapter excerpted from Freedom from Fear:The American People in Depression and War,1929-1945. Between1929and1945, two great events took place in American:the Great Depression and World War Ⅱ. Freedom from Fear tells the story of how Americans endured, and eventually prevailed, in the face of those unprecedented calamities. There are two main purposes for selecting this book as my translation material. First of all, translating this kind of materials is intended to promote people’s awareness of the damage of war and the preciousness of peace. Secondly, the translator hopes that the translation can arouse Chinese readers’ interest in American history, and the translation approaches can be of some help to future translation of similar kind.In translation, the translator came across some difficulties as follows. Firstly, at lexical level, the meaning of a single word or expression is easy to understand, but when they are combined together, to some extent they are difficult to understand and translate. Secondly, at syntactic level, in the original text there are many long and complex sentences, which often cause mistakes in comprehension. The translation project contains two parts. The first part is the original text and the E-C translation text. The second part is a critical commentary on the translation. In the commentary report, the text-type theory of Peter Newmark is rendered to guide the translation practice, and the problems mentioned above are discussed and analyzed, and the corresponding approaches are also offered. Approaches like addition, conversion, form alteration and four-character structure are suggested at lexical level. In dealing with the long sentences, the translator applies change of sentence order, division at syntactic level. In terms of rhetorical level, reproducing the figures of speech in the original text is employed.
