This thesis is based on the translation script of Structures:Or Why Things don’t Fall Down,which is a basic book of science and technology.The author of the source text introduces the structural knowledge in a easy-understanding and plain language and hopes to popularize the basic referred concepts in the book to the public.Newmark’s text type theory is the guide of the translation.Meanwhile,communicative translation is adopted as translation strategy.In the case analysis,different translations are compared and selected to meet translation requirements and communicative purposes.This report is divided into five parts.The first chapter is the introduction of the source text,the significance of translation.Besides,the analysis of the source text is conducted from two aspects:stylistic features and linguistic features.The second chapter is mainly on Newmark’s translation theories.The third chapter is the description of the task completing process.The fourth chapter is case analysis.The fifth part summarizes the results and limitations of this translation practice.This report draws the conclusion that text type theory and communicative translation strategy can offer valuable guidelines applicable to effective translation of informative text,the fundamental aim of which is to convey necessary and original information to target readers.Meanwhile,choosing appropriate method in accordance with communicative translation strategy is conductive to adequate translation.
