Fuzziness, as one of the characteristics of all languages, is a common phenomenon all over the world. Being the art of using language in a special way, rhetoric can improve our ability to polish words and expressions. The development of fuzzy theory and fuzzy linguistics provides a new approach to analyze traditional rhetoric, resulting in the prosperity of a new branch in this field:fuzzy rhetoric. For a long time, the standardization of TCM translation is on the top priority of academic research, while the study of fuzzy language in TCM classics is scarcely seen. Being two different subjects, pragmatics and rhetoric have their own focus. However, the two can promote each other in many aspects. In many cases, the achievements of pragmatics can make the rhetoric study more fruitful and the development of rhetoric study can also promote the former. Pragmatics has a strong guiding role in analyzing language and translation, thus providing a new perspective to study fuzzy rhetoric in Huang Di Nei Jing. In terms of the features of TCM, there exist abundant fuzzy rhetoric phenomena due to many factors, including generality and abstractness of TCM terms, close relationship among things in nature, inability to explain their relationship and artificial fuzzification, etc.According to Han Qingling’s classification of fuzzy rhetoric in her monograph, two categories of fuzzy rhetoric (the conventional fuzzy rhetoric and unconventional fuzzy rhetoric) have been studied in this research. Based on random sampling method,118 words of conventional fuzzy rhetoric and 150 sentences of unconventional fuzzy rhetoric as well as the corresponding translation are selected respectively. Meanwhile, this study also refers to the achievements of literature study, fuzzy rhetoric, translation study, linguistics, pragmatics, corpus and other subjects. This paper, under the framework of relevance-adaptation theory, makes a tentative study towards fuzzy rhetoric in TCM classics so as to explore the optimal translation of TCM and push it into the international stage.
