Correlation Study Between Initial Employment Of English Major Undergraduates In M College In Year 2013 And Individual Capital

During the process of Higher Education Massification in China, with the fierce competition in job market and the change of employment mechanism,college students are faced with severe employment situation and challenges.The saturated job market for English majors also makes employment problem for English majors. With the help of questionnaires, the author of the thesis conducts a statistic analysis of detailed information about the initial employment situation of English major graduates in M College in year 2013. Based on the information, the author, from the perspective of individual capital, discusses the correlation relationship between human capital and initial employment, and the correlation relationship between social capital and initial employment.Study findings: First, the general information of initial employment of English majors: the initial employment rate is not high; the overwhelming employment units are enterprises and education institutions; the job suited rate is not high; the sources of employment information are varied, while the percentage of information from colleges is not high, playing a less satisfactory role in employment guidance. Second, about human capital : the relationship between academic achievement and starting salary is positive correlation; the relationship between the situation of student leaders and starting salary is positive correlation; the relationship between academic achievement and job suited degree is positive correlation; Graduates with better academic achievement are more likely to work in State organs and Public institutions, graduates with better situation of student leaders are more likely to work in State organs、Public institutions and foreign-invested enterprises, and graduates who have taken more social practices are more likely to work in foreign-invested enterprises; the relationship between academic achievement and the time of initial employment is positive correlation;.the relationship between the situation of student leaders and the time of initial employment is positive correlation. Third, about social capital : the relationship between domestic economic situation and starting salary is positive correlation; the relationship between family social network and starting salary is positive correlation; the relationship between fathers’ occupation status and starting salary is positive correlation; the relationship between parents’ occupation status and job suited degree is positive correlation; Graduates with better domestic economic situation and richer family social network are more likely to work in State organs、Public institutions and state-owned enterprises,graduates whose parents have higher academic qualification are more likely to work in State organs and Public institutions and graduates whose parents have higher occupation status are more likely to work in State organs、Public institutions and state-owned enterprises,while are less likely to work in competitive enterprises.The author of the thesis has summarized and analyzed the concrete information of initial employment of English major graduates in M college in year 2013 from the perspective of English major.At the same time, the author has also put forwards some suggestion for college students、family、colleges and government : make great efforts to study professional knowledge and extend the content of extracurricular learning to improve the overall cultural level; take active part in students activities and expand the scope of socializing to promote comprehensive employment capability; change the traditional employment idea, and develop the idea of “extensive employment”; accumulate family social capital and take full advantage of family social capital; strengthen the mechanism of college employment guidance, improve the employment capacity of college students; inform the mode of personnel cultivating, combine “general education “ 、”professional teaching “ and “practical training”; establish and perfect the system of employment information service, ensure a smooth transmission of information.
