Southern Yue and Min Yue are two adjacent local authorities in the southern part of China in Xi Han Dynasty. Both of them being the habitat of Yue Minority with similar experience of rise and fall in accordance with the Xi Han Dynasty. Therefore, the cultures of both area have some differences but also are similar in more ways than one. In this paper, historical materials as well as cultural relics will be analyzed to explain why there are such differences between the two areas.Because of the shortage of literature of this period, the problem related to Southern Yue and Min Yue cannot be fully explained based on the literature only. Fortunately, under the social context of significant burial custom, abundant relics are uncovered from graves and are preserved to a good condition till now, among which pottery is the most important one, for "pottery allows us to distinguish the culture of different areas, periods and types". By comparing typical pottery of both areas on the basis of former studies, it is obvious that the pottery of Southern Yue is deeply influenced Han culture, but the pottery of Min Yue demonstrates a noticeable local characteristic. Based on the former analysis as well as the geographical environment of the two areas, a conclusion is reached:as Southern Yue is more suitable for farming, Han people tend to immigrated to Southern Yue, thereby making Southern Yue a farming area and thus deeply influenced by Han culture. However, because of the poor geographical environment, it is impossible for people in Min Yue to practice farming, and the social-economic formation meets a stagnation, so this area is hardly influenced by Han culture. In addition, related historical problems are also analyzed based on the cultural factors reflected by pottery.
