Today, with the progress of globalization, the exchange activities between international scholars are increased accordingly. As a modern open country, China has attracted more and more renowned international scholars who come to China to join the academic exchange activities. In recent years, various types of academic lectures are emerging in an endless stream. As a bridge in international communication, interpretation has played an important role in academic lectures. The simulated interpretation in this paper is based on an academic lecture in lexicology. In this paper, the author has chosen the academic lecture delivered by Mr. John Simpson the former chief editor of Oxford English Dictionary. The academic lecture was held in Shaanxi Normal University in April,2014. This practice report mainly takes the speech delivered by Mr.John Simpson as the material of simulated interpretation. Within the framework of the functional equivalence theory proposed by Nida (1986), the author has analyzed the problems occurred in this interpretation practice and attempted to give some solutions. Moreover, the author has applied the interpretative theory and Daniel Gile’s effort model into the study case of this paper. This practice report consists of four main chapters. The first chapter includes the introduction of the background information and description of the translation task. The second chapter is the description of the translation process, including the preparation before interpretation, the practical interpretation process, and the after issues of interpretation. In the third chapter, the author has listed some problems and did a careful case study based on specific examples. The problems mentioned above refer to the interpretation of low-frequency words, the audience’s influence on interpretation, the lack of background and encyclopedia information of interpreter, and the influence of note-taking. Finally, the author has presented some suggestions on solving these problems on the basis of the analysis of specific examples through applying related translation theory. The fourth chapter is the summary of this practice report. The author has fully summarized this interpretation practice and summed up the un-solved problems in this paper. Otherwise, the author has also talked about the enlightenment and help getting from this interpretation practice. In this practice report, the author has presented some problems may being encountered in academic lecture interpretation through her own experience. After the introduction of the functional equivalence theory in all-round way and careful analysis of specific examples, the author has tried to give some solutions for the problems. This interpretation practice has helped the author get a more comprehensive understanding on interpretation theory and practice. Meanwhile, as a student on interpretation, the author has a higer requirement on her interpretation study and clearer direction in her future work.
