With the continuous development of society and the improvement of people’s living standard, social demand for applied design talent is increasing. The real problem presented in front of us is how to establish a more effective education system to cultivate qualified designers urgently needed by society. As the first Bauhaus school in the world established for the development of modern design education, German Weimar established in the early twentieth century regards practical teaching as the important part of design education, which set up a new model of modern design education and has made a huge impact on world’s design education. Undoubtedly, Chinese design education is largely influenced by Bauhaus mode. Though some domestic art and design institutions have set up a number of practical courses for their design specialty, they still have some shortcomings on practical education, such as, cramming and didactic education dominating the class, unreasonable curriculum, loose linking with the market. The result is that many graduates cannot meet company’s demand. As setting up practical education courses for design majors and combining teaching content with practice to cultivate and improve students’practical and innovation ability are important contents of teaching reform of design specialties in art and design schools, the discussion of properly setting up practical curriculum for design majors has very important practical significance to the development of China’s design education and the improvement of our nation’s innovation capacity.This paper begins from analysis of practical teaching of Bauhaus design, and then collects the present situation of design practice teaching in China to make further exploration about how to develop rational and effective practical design teaching in China’s design education. The paper summarizes some practical teaching problems exists in design specialty of China colleges through consulting some reference materials, interviewing with some teaching management leaders and experienced professional teachers in design colleges and analyzing curriculum of design specialty in some art and design universities. The paper explores and analyzes problems such as low quality of students caused by enrollment expansion, graduates departing from companies’needs, unreasonable curriculum design and lacking of practical ability of young teachers, and then proposes some constructive opinions for the development of practical teaching of design specialties. The paper aims to make certain reformation and innovation on the establishment and methodology of practical teaching system of art and design specialties, to expand and deepen cognition of practical teaching, to bridge the gap between practical design education and social needs and to promote the development of art and design education in order to cultivate talents qualified for social development needs.
