A large number of basketball comments and related translations have emerged as the increasing worldwide impact of NBA(National Basketball Association) games and basketball games’popularity in China in the past years. And it has become a significant information source of international basketball games, sportsmanship and foreign culture. Yet the related research on the translation of basketball comments are still rare at present, therefore the author chooses it as the subject of this research.It’s generally acknowledged that the comments can not only spread games information but also present foreign culture and bring about head trip. Therefore, the localization made by translators plays a crucial role in the translating process so that readers can gain information on basketball and learn foreign culture at the same time.The paper studies basketball comments which represents a special branch of sports news based on the previous studies of predecessors. Firstly, the thesis presents the concept, functions and features of the basketball comments briefly. Then, the paper does a comparative study of Chinese and English basketball comments’titles and texts from the perspective of culture differences. From the study we can discover there exist several significant differences between length, rhetoric and tense of titles. Meanwhile, the differences of text are mainly reflected in wording, image and players’nicknames.In the light of Adaptation Theory and on the basis of comparative studies of Chinese and English basketball comments, the thesis attempts to probe into the English-Chinese translation strategies of the comments’texts and titles respectively from the aspect of words, culture and context, analyzing how the translators seek their local adaptation of translations with sufficient examples from prestigious basketball magazines and professional online sports columns.The paper contrasts two different translations of the same comments respectively from websites and printed magazines and probes how the translators from these two different medias adapt their translations to the reading preferences of their own readers.
