Translation Strategy Research On Basketball Commentary From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

With the growing prosperity of international sports events,the NBA's global influence continues to expand.English,as an international common language,exists in sports events all the time,and sports English has attracted great attention.The NBA has fascinated many people all over the world.The connotation and spirit of basketball has been greatly promoted and almost perfectly interpreted in the NBA.In the same way,basketball has entered an explosive period of development in China,and the number of live broadcasts of basketball matches is also increasing day by day.A large number of excellent basketball commentators have emerged in CCTV sports,such as Sohu sports,Tencent sports,Sina sports,Hupu Sports and other major online media.At the same time,more and more basketball commentary has been translated into Chinese,which has become one of the important ways for people of all ethnic groups to understand international sports events,international sports spirit and world sports culture.However,what is not consistent with the growth of basketball matches is that there are few studies in the field of translation of basketball commentary.This thesis will take translation of basketball commentary as the research object through pragmatic adaptation theory.Based on previous research results on basketball culture,this thesis briefly describes the definition,significance and research methods of basketball commentary,and studies the translation of basketball commentary as sports English.From the perspective of the cultural differences between Chinese and American basketball,this thesis makes a comparative study of Chinese and American basketball commentary from the aspects of words,syntax,nicknames and texts.Guided by four angles of investigation of Jef Verschueren's pragmatic adaptation theory,the author studies from the following three aspects:a)Adaptation theory and basketball commentary translation b)Context adaptation of NBA nicknames c)Comparison between two versions of the same text from the perspective of adaptation theory.The research materials selected Chinese and English versions from Tencent Sports NBA,Sina Sports,Jinri Toutiao,Hupu Sports Basketball Column,Yahoo and ESPN as the research objects to analyze how Chinese and American basketball commentary are adapted to translation from the aspects of context,structure,dynamics and salience.The thesis discusses the language selection process,standards and strategies in English-Chinese translation of basketball commentary,and proposed that English-Chinese translation is a continuous process of selection,which is the result of the mutual adaptation of language structure and context.At the same time,the thesis also compares the two versions of the same text,and analyzes how the translator achieves the localization of the translation from the aspects of vocabulary,grammar,syntax,rhetoric and tense,cultural background knowledge and thinking culture.
