In recent years, the incidence of respiratory diseases has been on the rise,so the demand for related medical research and treatment has been growing. An increasing number of medical experts and scholars commit to the researches in this field. Therefore, the demand for translation of medical literature, books and materials has also increased.Medical translation,as an effective channel for obtaining medical information in professional disciplines abroad,is of great practical significance and value. This translation practice report discusses the content of respiratory diseases in Chapter Three of a large-scale medical professional literature Clinical Internal Medicine. This book was published by Little,Brown and Company in 1979,with accurate language, standardized statement and strong professionalism. As there are no Chinese translations of this book, while the respiratory diseases in internal medicine have once again become a hot topic in the field of general medicine, the lack of literature about the previous development in the history of related diseases and comparative studies on the latest medical accomplishments urgently require the translation of the text so as to provide a reference for disease treatment.Under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory, the corresponding translation methods are put forward, based on the characteristics of medical English, the difficulties in translating and the principles of medical English translation. The present report justifies the translation examples from the perspective of lexical level, syntactic level, and textual level and the translation methods adopted demonstrate effectiveness and professionalism with theories. At the lexical level, three translation methods are employed, including amplification, transposition, and diction. At the syntactic level, linear and syntactic restructuring are mainly used. The latter covers three methods which are inversion, conversion, and division. In addition,at the syntactic level, the method of imaging-aided translation is also emphatically analyzed. At the textual level, methods of logical contextual coherence and contextual integration are proposed so as to achieve semantic coherence and cohesion. The selection of these methods enables thetarget language and source language to achieve effective functional equivalence. In this report, the theory applied to the practice of medical English translation, the gains and lessons in translation are summarized in order to improve the translator's translation quality and to provide references for medical English translation.
