A Tentative Study On The C-E Translation Skills Of Patent Abstracts From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the increasingly deepening of reform and opening up, science and technology in China have developed rapidly, as well as the competition between enterprises. In order to stand steadily on the world arena, enterprises encourage their employees to invent new products. Thus, as an important material of external publicity for scientific competition, the translation of patent literature is also growing. This thesis introduces the project of patent abstract translation entrusted by Shi Ji Jin Xin Technical Translation Company, with the total translation words by the author are more than 300,000. Through the project process and case analysis, this paper mainly discusses the translation skills and methods of abstract of the utility model patent under the guidance of Skopos theory as well as how to achieve accuracy, legibility and communicative purposes of translation by using language transformation techniques in such project. By using the methods of literature research, case analysis, and summary and conclusion, the author analyzes the source text and the target text comprehensively. Through the analysis of the characteristics of the source text and the function and purpose of the source text and the target text, the author puts forward basic translation principles and methods of abstract of the utility model patent. In the process of translation, the author focuses on the concretization of the words, uses amplification, ellipsis, and substitution to make the translation natural, and splits the sentence group or integrates it. For the long sentences, the author adopts linear translation, splitting translation, and substitution to ensure the accuracy and fluency of the translation. The author hopes this essay could provide some help for translators in translating of such texts and operating of such small translation project.
