Patent Translation In Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the increasing importance of intellectual property,the number of patent application rises,especially the number of patents from other countries.Therefore,the demand for patent translation grows.Based on the translation practice of "Medium Voltage Hybrid Insulator Apparatus," an application for a patent,this thesis discusses translation strategies from the perspective of Skopos theory.The thesis,according to the content of the patent,discusses the translation of description and claims in two parts.For problems during the translation,the author studies the translation action in light of Skopos theory to find out solutions.In the translation of description,the author firstly converts the format to keep the same content in different format.The second step is in the perspective of terms.Terms must be translated accurately so that technicians in this field can understand.Last but not least,the readability of target text should be taken into consideration.In the translation of claims,the first requirement is format as well.The other purpose of claims is to acquire more scope of legal protection.The author adopts the strategy of ambiguity.The ambiguity strategy here shall not be regarded as disloyalty to original translation.This strategy is used to achieve the purpose so that the guiding function of the Skopos theory in patent translation is shown.This study is a useful attempt against the backdrop of the rising of patent translation,which is determined to provide ways for patent translation so as to accelerate the development of translation in this field.
