On Translation Strategies Of Nominalization In Est From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

Nominalization is used frequently in EST for its objectivity, accuracy and explicitness. However, it is difficult to reproduce the reality described by the nominalization. It is worth studying on this respect with the aim to improve translation quality of nominalization in EST.This thesis studies nominalization translation strategies under the guidance of functional equivalence. Nominalization has great advantages in expression of EST. Based on the previous studies and the author’s translation experience, this thesis first discusses classification and characteristics of nominalization in EST, and then analyzes some cases in the author’s practice work to verify how to translate nominalization from source language to target language under the guidance of functional equivalence. Three translation strategies are proposed in the paper which are literal translation at the lexical and contextual level, free translation through transfer, and style equivalence through professionalism and thinking modes.
