In the process of globalization, exchanges in science and technology play an important role.Scientists from different countries need to overcome the language barrier to gain the latest research results. Therefore, the translation of English for Science and Technology(EST)becomes more and more important.EST is a kind of informative text and its main function is to deliver information exactly instead of pursuing the artistic beauty. There are many nominalized structures in EST.How to translate nominalizations is the key to the EST translation.Present EST translation is based on the experience of translators and lacks theoretical guidance. This thesis chooses Nida's functional equivalence theory to guide the translation of nominalizations in EST,aiming to produce the closest natural equivalent of the source language in the target language, first in terms of meaning and second in terms of style.Un-der the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the author selects flexible translation methods to translate nominalizations and achieves expected effects. The translation main-tains the faithfulness of the source language and conforms to the conventional ways of Chinese expression. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces the background,con-tent and significance of this study. The second chapter defines the nominalization,summa-rizes typical types of nominalizations in EST,presents the functional equivalence theory and reviews domestic studies on nominalizations. The third chapter puts forward some translating methods on the phase and sentence levels respectively to realize functional equivalence on the basis of translation practice. There are three methods for translating nominalizations on the phrase level, including literal translation, addition and conversion.Omission and division are adopted to translate nominalizations on the sentence level. The fourth chapter gives a brief summary of this thesis, points out the limitation of this study and offers some suggestions to translators.
