In recent years, with the rapid development of science and technology all over the world,English for Science and Technology(EST)has become increasingly important and gained broad attention and high recognition.EST translation has also played a vital role in the exchanges of science and technology among countries Excellent translations can facilitate the exchanges of science and technology as well as promote the dissemination of science and technology knowledgeThis report is on the basis of the author's practice experience of the English-Chinese translation of an EST text titled Automatic Straw Applicator Manuals(excerpts),which is provided by the product manufacture for users to introduce in detail the automatic straw applicator, its operation instructions, the problems requiring attention during the operation and maintenance, etc.During the translation practice, the author finds that the application of nominalization is one of the most prominent language features of the source text, since nominalization can convey comprehensive information more succinctly and objectively by shortening the length and increasing the information capacity of the whole sentences. In order to better translate nominalization, the author flexibly adopts several translation techniques under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida, which exerts positive effects on the improvement of translation quality. At present, most studies on EST translation concentrate on terms, passive voices as well as long and complex sentences, but few focus on the translation of nominalization. Thus, based on this translation practice, the author writes a report which describes the translation process, presents the definition and classification of nominalization as well as its application in EST text, analyzes the development of the functional equivalence theory and its employment in EST texts, and also summarizes translation techniques of nominalization in EST texts under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory, including literal translation, conversion and addition for nominalization at the lexical level as well as translation into verb-object structure, translation into subject-predicate structure, omission and division for nominalization at the phrasal level. It is expected that this report can provide references for further studies on translation of nominalization in EST texts.
