A Report On The Translation Of The Court Interpreters Act Of 1978 With CAT Tools—Difficulties And Solutions

This is a report on the translation practice of translating a legal text with CAT tools. During the process, project management skills in the modern language service industry were applied. By translating the Court Interpreters Act of 1978 and other three relevant texts, difficulties of translating legal texts and solutions of using CAT tools to translate the legal texts are discussed.As we all know, one the one hand, translation with CAT tools is a significant part of modern translation practice with the development of the language service industry. On the other, legal translation takes a large proportion in this global time, due to the cultural gap and differences of legal systems, both Chinese law and American law have their own characteristics which may cause difficulties to translators with CAT tools. Proper management and specific measures should be implemented during the pre-translation, in-translation and after-translation process. The Translation Memory of CAT tools is benefit for consistency in both language and format while its segmenting rules cause problems in transiting of the long and complex sentences, and in coherence of the legal texts. All those problems are discussed in this report.We all know that legalization of translation service in China still remains blank, we not only can learn about the stipulations and regulations in America, but also can set a pattern for legalization of our certification program of legal translators and interpreters. I will analyze the nature and features of the source texts as well as relevant parallel texts.Additionally, some significant problems of translating with CAT tools are explored from the perspective of a professional translator. I hope my translation practice could provide reference for policy makers and other legal experts and learners.
