A Project Report On Translation Of A Software Tool For Rapid Flood Inundation Mapping

This project report is about a translation of A Software Tool for Rapid Flood Inundation Mapping published by U.S.Geological Survey in October,2016.The translation project is entrusted by Shanxi Society of Surveying and Mapping(SXSSM)(hereinafter referred to as "the Client")and the purpose of the translation version is regarded as its internal material for the use of staff.As a non-literary work,the project refers to a new technology for mapping flood inundation,consisting of seven core contents,which includes Introduction and Background,GIS Flood Tool Concepts,Software Tools,Elevation Data,Software Validation,Applications of the GIS Flood Tool Software and Technical Considerations.For the author,it is a new field of practical translation.In the report,the author describes the process of pre-translation,translation and post-translation stages,mainly covering the steps of project introduction,text analysis,case study,quality control and client's feedback.During the process of translation,firstly,the author,according the text characteristics and functions,together with client's requirements and industry norms in translation,determines translation criteria.Secondly,based on Newmark's text typology,the author chooses communicative strategy proposed by Newmark as a general translation strategy.Thirdly,difficulties in translation are showed in cases study with their corresponding solutions and specific translation methods,such as division and combination,reverse-checking,addition and omission,and so on.The author has initially mastered the text characteristics and its translation strategies about flood inundation mapping during the process of translation.The report summarizes relevant translation strategies and methods,as well as a terminology glossary.It is hoped that the report could provide a valuable translation version and experience in this field for other translators.
