A Translation Report On China And The Shaping Of Indonesia,1949-1965(Excerpts)

This report is completed based on translation of the excerpts of China and the Shaping of Indonesia, 1949-1965 by Liu Hong. The whole translation project is assigned to a team of three students and Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 are the source text of this translation report. China and the Shaping of Indonesia, 1949-1965 mainly focuses on not only the historical background, practical significance of various Chinese images in Indonesia, but also the research approaches and perspectives to study Overseas Chinese problems. Liu Hong is one of the outstanding scholars in the Overseas Chinese research field. With the reference of declassified documents, the author makes a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the reality and dilemma existing during 1949-1965 in Indonesia through the unique perspective of“transnationalism” which possesses instructive significance and provides great reference value.Based on the language features of the source text, with the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts theory, the translator analyzes specific problems emerging in the procedure of translation from perspectives of level shifts and category shifts. This translation report is composed of four parts. The first chapter is task description through which the reader can get a general understanding of the research significance,the author of the source text and the book itself; the second chapter focuses on procedure description including the preparations, process of translation and proofreading; the third chapter is about the case study which applies Catford’s theory of translation shifts to analyze the problems in the process of translation; the fourth part is the conclusion, which gives a brief analysis of the language features of the source text and the differences between Chinese and English to explain why the translation shifts is adopted as the translation strategy to deal with translation problems.
