Since the 1990 s, translation competence has been a focal point in Translation Studies. Regarding the differences between interpreting and translation, it is reasonable and justified to study interpreting competence separately. The goal of interpreting training is to cultivate talents with interpreting competence. While most research mainly focuses on teachers’ teaching, few have paid attention to students’ learning. In interpreting class, the teacher usually introduces and demonstrates a certain technique and leaves students with limited time for practice. Therefore the improvement of interpreting competence rests upon after-class drilling. This research reviews models of interpreting training models in China, including“Xiada Model”, “Guangwai Model”, “the 3P Model”, etc. Merits and demerits of these models are summarized. There are two kinds of interpreting practice: in-class practice and after-class practice. Interpreting practice can also take the form of individual practice, pair work and group work with consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills as the focus. Based on the previous research, this paper clarifies the relation between interpreting competence and interpreter competence and discusses components and development of interpreting competence. A practice model targeted at the development of interpreting competence is put forward based on the theory of interpreting competence. It is hoped that this research can provide reference for interpreting teaching and practice. It is concluded that interpreting competence is not the same as interpreting skills. It is regarded as a superordinate including the knowledge required for interpreters and the ability to perform the interpreting task effectively.
